We designed this shop to match the elegant grandeur of the hacienda. When this property opened three decades ago our two young sons attended what might have been the first birthday party celebrated at the hotel. The word they used to describe the party was “chiva” so we also wanted to capture that sensation when the Authentica shop opened in 2019.

This is where Authentica began, and as the only of our shops within Costa Rica’s Central Valley, close to where we live, it holds a distinct place in our story. It is our largest, so we have more room to display the wealth of Costa Rica’s culture—vibrancy in both traditional and innovative forms of artisan craft. Located within the historic Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belén, set on a coffee plantation, Authentica celebrates that setting with extra attention to Costa Rica’s unique coffee history. Be sure to participate in Hacienda Belen’s coffee tour, where we provide the storyline for the evolution of coffee in Costa Rica from its arrival to the present day.

About This Location, As We Know It

There is an artwork on the lower floor of the Marriott Los Sueños that inspired our design here. Even after three decades of looking at it that sculpture (a wooden boat with bottles attached to its hull, each with a message inside—you need to see it to appreciate it) brings us, in a word, wonderment. So this was the spirit of the design and there is plenty of space to display a wide array of Costa Rica wonders.

A profusion of colorful hand-wrought birds hangs from the ceiling in the center of the shop, and to the side of that display is one of the best collections of traditional Boruca masks anywhere in the country. It is a beach location, so the feeling of the shop reflects the wonderment of the ocean through the paintings by local artists displayed around the shop. Beyond the gift shop, Authentica also serves the wider Los Sueños community by providing Organikos coffee to the surrounding managed residences, extending the experience from the resort into the homes that are part of the destination.

About This Location, As We Know It

Our family first visited Sí Como No in 1996. Manuel Antonio was one of the pioneering locations for sustainable tourism, and this was one of the pioneering hotels. Its buildings were designed around the trees. We got to know the founder on that first visit and developed a lifelong friendship. He explained the wordplay in the naming of the hotel, and of the two restaurants on site: each is a “dicho,” a common saying that Costa Ricans use frequently. So for us this location represents a deep connection to local culture.

Its close proximity to the Manuel Antonio National Park made that one of the first places where our entire family deepened our appreciation of this country’s commitment to conservation. Last, but not least, the hotel has a swimming pool overlooking the Pacific ocean, with a waterslide that winds down to the pool through lush rainforest flora. To this day our sons remember this place as a key colorful play space of their youth. And now our granddaughter also enjoys that waterslide. So, conceptualizing this Authentica shop in 2022, our guiding sense was playful local culture.

About This Location, As We Know It

In the late 1990s we first came to this area for birdwatching in the Palo Verde National Park and Tempisque river basin. We did not have the chance to return until 2023, when the owners of Hacienda El Viejo invited us to consider an Authentica shop in this location. Their goal, we learned, was to protect the several thousand acres of wetlands ecosystem, and they wanted a gift shop that would help them fund that protection. The eBird app maintained by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology verified that these wetlands have exceptional birdwatching conditions, so this Authentica shop was designed with birds and nature conservation as the key themes.

Every purchase in our shop directly supports the protection and restoration of the surrounding wetlands, helping preserve one of the region’s most important ecosystems for generations to come. Neighboring both traditional and organic sugar plantations, Hacienda El Viejo showcases wildlife, sustainable agriculture, regional traditions, and Costa Rican hospitality. The property is also home to La Casona, a restored National Heritage building with a great restaurant.

About This Location, As We Know It

Surf shack! No boards or wax in this shop, but the vibe resonates. We first visited here in 1997, and since then Tamarindo has been our go-to recommendation as the ideal place to learn how to surf. The beach has a reliable break, long and gentle, with a sandy bottom perfect for beginners. There are surfing schools for all ages. We have a standing date with our grand daughter to take surfing lessons together here. When we were invited in 2023 to set up shop in front of Capitán Suizo, our inspiration was surfing.

The shop is located inside what had been an open-air woodworking shed so when we renovated that space our concept was rustic surf shack. If our Belen shop gives an elegant grandeur vibe, this one gives a barefoot elegance vibe, emphasis on the barefoot. At the quiet end of Tamarindo Bay, the hotel is removed from the pace of town while remaining within walking distance of its center. The hotel is known for its intimate beachfront setting, deeply personal hospitality, and longstanding respect for the nature and wildlife woven throughout the property. Surrounded by trees and just beyond the hotel grounds, Authentica carries that same sense of calm and character into a shop with a presence all its own.

About This Location, As We Know It

Authentica Nosara is on one of the loveliest street corners in the entire country. This distinctive coastal community is shaped by creative energy, wellness culture, and world class surfing. Our space offers a grounded expression of Costa Rica’s vibrant craft community, and we have the good fortune to be a few steps from the best bakery in the entire country. After your breakfast or lunch at Organico, come see what we have found to share with you from some of our artisan, coffee farming and beekeeping friends.

Even with three decades living in Costa Rica, and many visits to Nosara over the years, we still have the feeling of getting to know this place. For that reason, our guiding theme with the look and feel of this shop is curiosity. We have a life-size Boruca figure at the front door to welcome you. What might have been called our cabinet of curiosities in an earlier era, this shop has Boruca masks as well as a full display of textiles from the women artisans of that community. The natural dyes they use complement the simple patterns on woven placemats, table runners and coasters. For curious younger folk we have the most extensive collection of Costa Rica-made games for children, as well as wooden toys, plush animals and a locally made all-natural playdough.
